We’re still getting reports that a 2013 remake for The Last of Us is in the works, and it looks like it’s set to launch sometime this year. The remake will presumably launch over the holiday season, which is currently pretty empty following the Starfield delay.
“I keep hearing that” [The Last of Us remake] coming out this year,” said Grubbsnax host and GamesBeat reporter Jeff Grubb on the May 18, 2022 episode of Kinda Funny Gamescast. “The Last of Us remake this holiday.”
Several sources have already reported this story, so there is a good chance that there is some truth in the story. In a tweet in January, freelance writer and game industry insider Tom Henderson first reported that The Last of Us remake would launch in “the second half of 2022.” Bloomberg contributed to this forecast and released its own report in April.
Also in April, a LinkedIn listing hinted that developer Naughty Dog may be working on a remake for The Last of Us. The listing states “QA Test and Development Support + Level Point of Contact for Unannounced Remake Project.”
The list also mentions an “unannounced multiplayer project”, which could mean that this unannounced remake will include an online component.
Admittedly, the listing could also have been about two completely different games. At CES 2022, Neil Druckmann teased that Naughty Dog is currently working on “multiple game projects”.
I think we’ll have to wait a little longer to find out. For now, when it comes to Naughty Dog’s post-apocalyptic franchise, all we know for sure is that HBO’s The Last of Us TV show will be out in 2023.
