When making your way through Moreau’s watery swamp pit in Resident Evil Village, players would reportedly encounter an array of new creatures one day, including mermaids. But as would be expected from a Resident Evil game, these mermaids wouldn’t be the Disney princess versions that resemble those of Ariel and her family. Rather, they went into (literally) monstrous pain for Ethan Winters and players.
Trustworthy Resident Evil Leaker Twilight Golem, who has insider knowledge of the series’ development, shared more details about Moreau’s area in the game, as well as the enemies players would face there. When discussing the mermaid as enemies that were eventually cut from the final release, Dusk Golem revealed:
“In the water they could swim quickly for you if… [they] you saw, and you had to go to pieces of land or successfully kill them before they reached you.
“Even on land, though they can be annoying and [would] do this shrieking attack that stunned you and slowed you down for a while. The screeching had a second purpose, however, [as] the swamp had a stalker enemy in it.”
So, what about this swamp stalker? Well, it sure sounds like being hunted by this beast would be a lot less enjoyable than being followed by a certain tall vampire lady through the halls of Dimitrescu Castle.
“I’ve been described as ‘a slimy type of Tyrant-esque creature,'” Dusk Golem said.
†[This creature had] “a giant soursop around his neck and shoulders,” and when he was close, he could spit acid or use a clawing hand. The screeching of the mermaid monsters would also attract the stalker enemy [to the player]the one on country paths I think [this stalker] was the biggest threat.”
While Dusk Golem never confirmed who this acid-spitting tyrant was, they assume it would be Moreau.
If evil mermaids and stalking tyrants weren’t enough to contend with, the swamp area in Village would also allow the game’s Lycans and “witches” to perform some sort of ritual in the area.
“There was a part [where] there were some Lycan & ‘Witches’ (Witches are basically what Dimitrescu’s daughters are in the final but played a very different role before in dev) around a fire.
“They had objects around their ritual spot, and… [players] can either sneak past them or fight them for the items.”
Apparently this content has all been removed from Resident Evil Village so the team can focus more on Castle Dimitrescu and Heisenberg’s factory.
This is unfortunate, as Moreau’s area (as well as Moreau itself) is often considered one of the game’s weaker points. Including the aforementioned enemies would have added more dynamism to the area and certainly increased the overall sense of threat.
Perhaps these ideas will resurface in the announced but unfinished Resident Evil Village DLC… Watch this space.
