Netflix has called the time for the supernatural drama series Locke and Key.
As first reported by Deadline (opens in new tab)the show, which began streaming in 2020, will conclude with its upcoming third season, which is expected to premiere later this year.
Locke and Key, an adaptation of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez’ fantasy comic series, follows a trio of siblings – Kinsey (CODA’s Emilia Jones), Tyler (Connor Jessup) and Bode (Jackson Robert Scott) – who, after the murder of their father, move to their ancestral home, a mysterious mansion full of locked doors and magical keys.
We already knew that the show would return for a third season — Netflix filmed seasons 2 and 3 back-to-back in 2020 — but it was unclear until now if Locke and Key would be renewed for further entries.
The good news, however, is that a three-season run is in line with the ambitions of the showrunners of the series, Carlton Cuse and Meredith Averill, who said in a statement it was “the ideal length to tell the story of the Locke family.” and their Keyhouse adventures to a satisfying conclusion.”
“As storytellers,” the couple continued, “we are grateful that we had the opportunity to tell our version of the incredible story of Joe Hill and Gabriel Rodriguez exactly as we wanted. However, we keep the magic keys for our own personal use.” .”
In truth, fans of Locke and Key should be thankful that the show even exists. The Hill and Rodriguez comic book series was first launched as a feature film, before being picked up by Fox in 2010 – then quickly removed again. The idea then turned back into a movie at Universal that, again, didn’t materialize, leaving hulu to collect the documents in 2018.
However, Hulu didn’t take the show beyond a pilot episode, opening the door for Netflix, which redeveloped and recast Locke and Key into a full series that eventually debuted in 2020.
It’s cutting season at Netflix
Locke and Key is not the only popular series that Netflix is saying goodbye to in 2022.
Archive 81in our opinion one of the best shows on Netflixused to be recently canceled by the streamer after just one season. The horror-style drama, which debuted on Netflix in early 2022, received good reviews from critics and earned a 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes†
Sci-fi series Another Life also has found his head on the chopping block this year, along with beloved comedy Grace and Frankie and the exceptionally well received The Babysitters Club†
All things considered, Locke and Key are lucky to have survived this long. Despite being well received by critics and audiences, the show rarely broke through Netflix’s Most Popular Shows Listand the streamer has historically preferred to eliminate underperformers after just two seasons (see The OA, Sense 8, Altered Carbon, The Order…).
So fans should be thankful that Netflix chose to film the show’s last two entries back to back – even though we’ll be sad to see the back of the Locke family.
