Lyft driver celebrated for refusing to take passengers over over racist comment

A Lyft driver in Pennsylvania has become a social media hero after he kicked a cafe owner for racist comments.

James W Bode shared on social media a dashcam video of the incident that took place outside Fossil’s Last Stand, a motorcycle bar along the 400 block of Race Street in Catasauqua.

The video shows Mr. Bode waiting in the car while the rider Jackie gets into the vehicle. He greets her warmly: “Hello, you’re Jackie, aren’t you? How are you?”

As she gets into the vehicle, she says to Mr. Bode, “Oh, you’re like a white man.”

The driver asks in bewilderment, “What is that?”

“Are you… are you… a white person?” Mrs. Jackie replied, to which Mr. Bode said, “Excuse me?”

She patted him on the shoulder and replied, “You’re such a normal boy – you say, you speak English?”

“No, you can get out of the car,” Mr. Bode said. “I’m going to cancel the ride. That’s inappropriate. It’s completely inappropriate. If someone wasn’t white in this chair, what would be the difference?”

“Are you serious?” the woman asks, as another man tries to get into the car.

Mr Bode told the man he was canceling the ride because of Ms Jackie’s comments.

The male passenger didn’t take it well: ‘You’re an asshole. You’re a piece of shit,” the man told the driver. “I should punch you in the damn face.”

‘You’re going to threaten me? Robbery?” Mr. Bode replied. “You are racist bastards.”

“And you’re an asshole,” the man said as he closed the vehicle door, before adding, “F***ing N***** lover.”

Mr Bode warned them that he would call the police.

In his Facebook post, Mr Bode wrote: “A police report has been filed (just because of the threat of attack) not sure if that will do anything…if you make me feel uncomfortable I will absolutely do the same, especially in my car.” or property. Yes, they were notified that I was recording, yes I have messages in my car indicating that.”

His video has received more than 10,000 likes on Facebook and has been shared nearly 4,000 times.

In a follow-up message on Sunday, Mr Bode said: “Thank you to everyone who reaches out and shows support. I appreciate it, I really do.”

“But that’s how it should be always and everywhere. I shouldn’t be “the man” who did or said it… we should all be that person. Say it if you’re not comfortable with it, because it makes them uncomfortable, as it should. F*** racism.”

Police in Catasauqua have confirmed that the woman featured in the video is the owner of Fossil’s Last Stand, Jackie Harford. They have launched an investigation into the case, reported Lehigh Valley Live

In a tweet on Sunday, Lyft praised Mr. Bode for his handling of the incident.

“We are incredibly grateful to Lyft driver @Jameswb333 for immediately ending this hatred and enforcing our anti-discrimination policy with no tolerance. We are investigating these riders and are in contact with James to express our gratitude,” it said.
