A convicted murderer has managed to escape police custody in Leon County, Texas, and is now on the run after allegedly stabbing a guard while being brought in for a medical examination.

A school in nearby Centerville was closed for a day on Friday over fears the fugitive could hide in the city. Residents are advised to lock their doors and vehicles.

Gonzalo Lopez, 46, escaped on foot and is currently at large.

The escape happened when a bus was carrying him and other inmates along Highway 7 near Centerville. Lopez manages to let go of his shackles and then assaulted the bus driver, identified by police as correctional officer Randy Smith.

A Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman said a fight broke out on the bus, with Lopez allegedly trying to grab the guard’s firearm. Lopez allegedly cut the driver’s hand with a makeshift knife before the bus crashed and he escaped.

Police are now on the hunt for the escaped convict and have asked the public to stay away from him and call 911 if they see the man.

Lopez was serving a life sentence at the time of his escape

Gonzalo Lopez, the convicted murderer who escaped prison Friday, was serving a life sentence for killing a man in Hidalgo County and for the attempted murder of another man in Webb County.

Lopez worked for the La Mana drug cartel – based in Tamaulipas, Mexico – in 2015. At the time, he murdered Lupe Ramirez on a $40,000 drug debt.

As is common with many of the Mexican drug cartels, the execution was brutal, with Lopez reportedly tying up the man and dumping him in a shallow grave before killing him with a pickaxe.
