The delayed Season 1 of Battlefield 2042 is upon us. Developer DICE today confirmed that Season 1 is expected to be released “early June”.
This will be the next major update to Battlefield 2042 after release 4.1, which arrives on May 19. DICE will share a “full rundown” and the patch notes for Season 1 as it gets closer to release.
In February of this year, DICE delayed the launch of Season 1, as the studio instead prioritized getting the game in good shape after a less-than-ideal launch. “This decision gives us time to focus on improving the Battlefield 2042 experience while completing development of our seasonal content to ensure everything meets our quality standard,” DICE said at the time.
Season 1 is the first of four seasons to come to the game over a 12-month span. Players can expect four new specialists, new maps and “more all-new content” throughout the four seasons.
“We are committed and focused on making sure that Battlefield 2042 lives up to our aspirations and your expectations – it’s a task we want to accomplish,” said DICE.
Despite the battle of Battlefield 2042, the game was the fifth best-selling game of 2021 in the US, although EA has not announced a specific sales figure for the game. More recently, publisher EA management said the Battlefield series remains “very important” to the company, despite Battlefield 2042’s struggles.
While Battlefield 2042 didn’t sell as well as EA wanted, the launch period — EA’s Q3 2021 — was the most successful in the company’s 40-year history. The Battlefield series accounts for approximately 10% of EA’s total revenue.
Battlefield 2042 struggled in part because it was being developed during COVID, EA CEO Andrew Wilson said, saying some of the in-game design choices didn’t resonate with players.
In March, it was reported that DICE had started work on the next mainline Battlefield game, although this title has yet to be officially announced.
