Amber Heard was hurt by Johnny Depp’s lawyers over an audio recording where she hears her ex-husband urging to “tell the world” that he was a victim of domestic violence.
Ms. Heard took the stand Monday in the courthouse in Fairfax, Virginia, as the multimillion-dollar libel lawsuit resumed after a week-long hiatus.
During a cross-examination, Mr. Depp’s attorneys played audio of Ms. Heard telling Mr. Depp, “Tell them, I, Johnny Depp, I’m a victim of domestic violence… and see how many people believe you or your side.”
Mr Depp’s lawyer teased Ms Heard about her comments and asked if she did not believe her husband would tell the world that he was a victim.
Ms Heard agreed that she wouldn’t believe he would claim to be a victim because he was the one “who beat me up”.
“I told the man who beat me up,” Mrs. Heard replied.
“I found it hard to believe that he could or would do that, given the relationship he and I had.
“I thought it would be crazy if he did that, knowing what we’ve been through.”
When she insisted that she refer to Mr Depp not coming forward as a male abuse victim, Ms Heard denied that she was referring to his gender.
“I said it because he was a man who beat me up for five years,” she said.
During intense interrogations, Mr. Depp’s lawyer questioned why Ms. Heard had no visible bruising or signs of abuse in some of the photos taken at various events after alleged violence occurred.
Ms. Heard explained that she had used makeup to cover the scars and ice to reduce the swelling.
Jurors were shown close-up photos of Ms Heard’s mouth, taken after an appearance on James Corden’sThe late late show a day after she claimed to have been abused by her husband.
At the time, she allegedly had a chest from Mr Depp beating her.
She was also asked if there were any medical records of the alleged incident where Mr Depp sexually assaulted her with a liquor bottle. Ms Heard said she didn’t seek medical attention because she didn’t want anyone to know what happened.
The court also heard audio from Johnny Depp telling Amber Heard in 2016 that “you’ll never see my eyes again”.
Mr. Depp’s attorney asked Ms. Heard that her ex-husband “didn’t look at you once the whole lawsuit?”
When Mrs. Heard agreed, the lawyer said “but you have often looked at him”.
“You know exactly why he isn’t looking at you,” the lawyer said.
Ms. Heard told the court, “He can’t.”
Depp is suing his ex-wife for libel over the 2018 letter she wrote for The Washington Post where she described herself as a “public figure who represents domestic violence”.
The pirates of the caribbean actor is not mentioned in the article, which is titled “I spoke against sexual assault – and faced the wrath of our culture. That must change”.
However, Depp claims that it falsely implies that he is a domestic abuser – something he vehemently denies – and that as a result, he struggles to land roles in Hollywood. He demands $50 million.
Ms. Heard is suing for $100 million, accusing Mr. Depp of organizing a “smear campaign” against her and describing his lawsuit as a continuation of “abuse and harassment.”
